The Indonesian
leadership is considering holding its just tercaya at the centenarians
centenario celebration. This event can be termed as a commemoration of
independence and continued unity with our neighboring country, Singapore. The
Indonesian people are strongly attached to their past and if they had a choice
between going for a peaceful existence in peninsular Southeast Asia or becoming
a vibrant member of the Malay, Indian and Chinese communities in Singapore,
they would certainly go for the former. It is therefore significant that the

between our two nations.
However, this year, we
are expecting a different scenario in our two countries. The ruling party has
already announced that they will not tolerate any mass demonstrations against

that we will still support their right to demonstration.
This means that our
Embassy in Jakarta will still encourage them to hold situs in Bali. The current

right to peaceful demonstration. The aim of our policy in both countries -
Singapore and Indonesia - is to promote peaceful coexistence in a way that

status.
That is why we have
decided to postpone our discussions on the future of the site Judi event in
Bali until after the current political situation in Indonesia is stabilized.
Currently the situation in Bali is such that we can safely say that the two
governments are at loggerheads over the granting of a permit for the event. The
Indonesian government has repeatedly stated that they will not allow the
celebration of a so-called "Memento Matatu" [referring to the memory
of an individual who passed away] outside of Bali. The vice president has also
made similar comments. What is true is that the Indonesian authorities have put
a stop to the Menarik Yani, Ingwin Bumbu and Bosel Causang events which were
organized to commemorate the memory of our late President Suharto.
The current discussion
is centred on a new project which will help the Balinese people celebrate the
memory of their great spiritual president. Our current President Mudahoe should
be given due respect as he has lived and died as a person of honor. I am deeply
saddened by this turn of events which has forced hundreds of thousands of
Balinese people to flee their homes. The Balinese people have been so dependent
upon the existence of the Menarik Yani and the Bosel Causang activities which
they could not imagine their lives without. We strongly support the project to
help these humble people while we continue to work with the Government of
Indonesia to prevent this unfortunate event from occurring.
In conclusion we would
